How We Used To Live Film

Regent Street Cinema, London, UK

Screening of How We Used To Live, followed by a Q&A with director Paul Kelly and writer/author Travis Elborough hosted by author Cathi Unsworth. Presented by Heavenly Films.

How We Used To Live is a unique celebration of post-war London by acclaimed director Paul Kelly, created through a compelling use of rare footage drawn from the BFI National Archive.

With a narration by Ian McShane and an original score composed by Saint Etienne, How We Used To Live is alluringly impressionistic, poetical and political. Perhaps the most joyful, creative and entertaining offering to come from this unique film making collective.

Preceded by the short film Weather The Storm, 36mins (2017) The stark beauty of Shetland in winter provides the perfect backdrop for a couple in search of reconnection. Soundtracked by Skylark and the Scorpion (aka Nick J. Webb and Petra Jean Phillipson).

Asunder - Heavenly Films

As an Easter Weekend weekender Bob Stanley will be hosting a rare screening of his latest film project 'Asunder' at the monthly Heavenly Films night at Regent Street Cinema in London tomorrow evening Tuesday 18th April.

'Asunder' tells the story of what happened to an English town during the First World War, with almost all of its men fighting abroad and its women and children left behind. The North East was in the front line, thanks to its shipyards and munitions factories.

Using archive and contemporary footage and audio, Asunder collages the stories of people from Tyneside and Wearside to uncover just what life was like on the home front, with bombs falling on Britain for the first time, conscientious objectors sentenced to death, and women working as doctors, tram conductors and footballers.

The narrative moves from an Edwardian golden era, in which sport grew in popularity and aircraft and cars pointed to a bright new future, to a war that horrifically reversed this progress. In the Battle of the Somme, British, French and German armies fought one of the most traumatic battles in military history. Over the course of just four months, more than one million soldiers were captured, wounded or killed in a confrontation of unimaginable horror.

Narrated by Kate Adie, with a soundtrack composed by Mercury-nominated Field Music and Warm Digits.

The film will be followed by a Q&A with director Esther Johnson and writer/producer Bob Stanley.

“… and then all the world began to roar.” Private William Finlay, Durham Light Infantry Regiment and Lincolnshire Regiment.
