December 31, 2020 Dec 31st 2004 Today we're remembering a magical night at Shepherds Bush Empire in London on December 31st 2004. Was it really 16 years ago? How did that happen? We invited two of our favourite bands, The Concretes from Stockholm and a new London based quartet called The Magic Numbers, to open up for us and our friends Andy Votel and Robin Turner DJ'ed into the wee small hours. There was a lot of love in the room that night and shortly after the clock struck 12 - following a mad bagpiped Auld Lang Syne - all three bands joined together for a rousing rendition of The Zombies This Will Be Our Year. This was the programme designed by Paul Kelly that we gave out to all those who attended. Here's wishing everyone a Happy New Year!!! Lots of love Bob, Pete and Sarah xxx December 31st 2020 (newyearseve, happynewyear, withallourlove, bobpetesarah, remembering, 2004, with, theconcretes, themagicnumbers, andyvotel, mrandyvotel, robinturner, paulkelly, paulkellyfilm, withnotesby, kevinpearce, saintetienne) |

December 30, 2020 Saint Etienne Party It's been a tricky year for everyone, especially key workers, those working in healthcare and the NHS. But we can still have a party in our own bubble tomorrow night, dancing around the kitchen, glass of something fizzy in hand! With that in mind I've put a playlist of some of my favourite Etienne party tunes together (click the link in the bio) and wish you all a Happy New Year and a very special 2021! December 29, 2020 Monnow Valley Tim and I in a bathtub at Monnow Valley Studio in Monmouth, Wales. We needed pictures to announce the release of I Was Born On Christmas Day so I bombed down there with Jamie Fry. The Charlatans were recording their Up To Our Hips album and played us a few songs. Can’t Get Out Of Bed was the one I really loved that day and I still do. Happy, happy times. December 25, 2020 (10 Photos) Happy Christmas and Happy Birthday Bob!!! He Was Born On Christmas Day It was a match made in Heaven and Heavenly. Bob wrote about The Charlatans early on and we really liked him. I loved Saint Etienne from the minute I heard them and even more so when I realised it was our friend Bob. I met Sarah in Manchester in 1992 and we got on really well. To complete the set, Pete is a total gem too. It was an honour to become part of the Saint Etienne family. Tim Burgess - 25th December 2020 Making the video for Christmas Day was one of the best days, and one of the most surreal - what with Richard O'Sullivan and Tim Burgess partying alongside all our friends. Today of course is also Bob's birthday, we love him lots, happy Birthday!!! Pete Wiggs - 25th December 2020 What a great day. The best of times. It felt like we'd been to an actual wedding... as I get older my memory blurs events between the video and Sarah and Martin's actual wedding! A magical thing. Bob Stanley - 25th December 2020 I've never seen anyone look so effortlessly cool in a top hat as Tim did the day we made the video for I Was Born... I'll be thinking of Bob today because it's his Birthday! He was born on Christmas Day! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB!!! Love you loads! Sarah Cracknell - 25th December 2020 Photograph by: Tom Sheehan Choosing a winner for our Christmas competition was almost impossible as there were so many fantastic answers that touched us. December 17, 2020 (Three Photos) Tonight - 2012 For some reason, when I think about Tonight I imagine walking from Kentish Town station to the Forum. I remember one night going to see the Boo Radleys (supporting some American band I wasn't fond of, can't remember who) then going next door to see the Motown Junk era Manics at the Bull and Gate (who were amazing). Before I'd ever been to a gig in my life, I remember studying the sleeve of the Special AKA Live EP. There was so much to look at! Everyone was having a good time - could it even be a real photo and not a montage? Anyway, the photo on the cover of Tonight is from another Specials show, which seems quite appropriate. December 14, 2020 Fac51 - 30 years ago today We were excited to play the Hacienda as we'd been massive fans of Factory records. I vaguely remember Tony Wilson coming up to us and saying something like great gig lads, I think there was champagne involved - at least in his glass if not ours. Pete Wiggs - December 14th 2020 I don't remember Dave Booth DJing that night (we'd have been backstage I suppose) but he was a lovely man, the most open person on what was quite an intimidating scene. December 4, 2020 (Video) Cafe Exil Cafe Exil is a new compilation album on Ace Records put together by Bob Stanley and Jason Woods. When David Bowie and Iggy Pop escaped LA to go Interrailing in the mid-70s, they heard a new European music that was largely devoid of Anglo-American rock influence: the German motorik sound, flashes of jazz, experimentation and electronica. In West Berlin, one of their favourite haunts was Kreuzberg's Cafe Exil, a smoky hang-out for beats and intellectuals. This is its imaginary soundtrack. I imagine like many an Ace compilation, the impetus for Cafe Exil came from a record-playing session. One Sunday afternoon Bob and I were pleasantly pulling out LPs. Everything we played had a mildly electronic and European feel, perhaps as an antidote to the dreaded and then still looming Brexit. The majority of records we spun were fairly extensive in length, largely instrumental and hailed from the mid to late 1970s, with a few just edging into the following decade. Over subsequent conversations, we began to imagine ourselves going back in time and enjoying a pan-European sojourn, soaking up the sounds and cultures of the rapidly shifting time. David Bowie, of course, had done something similar, becoming a kind of cultural antenna as he sought to expand his horizons and open himself up to new influences. Though he had flown for the majority of his 1973 Ziggy Stardust tour schedule, after completing concerts in Japan, Bowie convinced his record label that he would require safe passage back to England by sea and land. Initially travelling from Yokohama to Nakhodka aboard the SS Felix Dzerzhinsky, Bowie travelled onwards with childhood friend and back-up singer Geoff MacCormack via the Trans-Siberian railway from Vladivostok to Moscow. The trip concluded with a stopover in Moscow, the witnessing of the May Day parade and a visit to the Kremlin and the GUM department store. A second Russian train trip occurred in April 1976 during the tour to promote Bowie's Station To Station, this time in the company of his formidable assistant Coco Schwab, photographer Andrew Kent and Iggy Pop. Bowie and Iggy relocated to Berlin following the recording of Iggy's The Idiot, abandoning bad finances, the trappings of Bowie's stratospheric stardom, failing marriage and perilous cocaine addiction for an apartment in the relatively working-class Schöneberg district in West Berlin, which was then home to many of the city's gay clubs. Living in Berlin from 1976-1979, Bowie was attracted both by the emerging Kosmische music and the cheap living and anonymity it afforded him. So what then are some more of the actual parameters for the songs you are about to listen to? In attempting to conjure the musical mood in the period referred to above we wanted to try and imagine some of the sounds and musical textures that fed into them and then expanded out of them. To do this we set ourselves a timeframe of 1972-1980. We were originally going to choose only instrumental tracks with a strong electronic element but then took various deviations and detours as we tried to imagine ourselves speeding through strange European cities and landscapes, meeting in cafes and soaking up new sounds and visions. We wanted to try and capture a mood and tone rather than something entirely concrete (or concrete), so have drawn upon motorik, library music, progressive rock, Italian folk fusion and more. There is a balance that leans quite naturally towards German artists and the inclusion of a track by Eno that acknowledges both his role as a sonic alchemist and his ability to act as a conduit and conductor for all music that is dictated by mood but not constrained by boundaries. The whole exercise came together quite seamlessly, really, the only thing that Bob and I still haven't agreed on is which of us is David and which of us is Iggy. JASON WOOD |

December 1, 2020 (Two Pictures) 27 Years Ago Today Where were you when we were getting high? Bob had a copy of the Oasis demo tape and we were keen to see them play live. Saint Etienne had a string of Christmas shows coming up so we asked if they would support. December 1st was the opening date in Birmingham. Tim Abbot from Creation Records turned up in the afternoon with a box of Columbia 12 inch singles. I remember being stood in their tiny dressing room as the box was cracked open and Noel - with a beaming smile - picked a copy off the top. The first Oasis record he'd seen. After a few seconds looking at it he said here you go handing me this very copy. During sound check he walked over and asked how much of the PA could they have - ie how loud could they go - I replied all of it and they didn't disappoint.
