Let's Do It!
Congratulations to Bob for having his latest book 'Let's Do It' rated as music title of the year by both the Times and the Telegraph. If you haven't read this one you really must – so much new/old music to discover! - and it's available from all good book shops and from our merch shop (www.SaintEtienne.com/merch).
2022 was a bumper year for music books and we thought you might like to know a few of our favourites...
First, 'A License to Rock and Pop' by our long-standing collaborator and dear pal Jamie Fry - reprinted at last, it's an amazing manifesto as well as a witty and clinical breakdown of what makes a 'proper' pop star. Head to @jimfry77 to find more out about how to get a copy.
We all really enjoyed Jarvis Cocker's @jarvisbransoncocker rummage through his attic 'Good Pop Bad Pop' and Sarah's holiday read - which she loved -was Miki Berenyi's 'Fingers Crossed' @berenyi_miki
Bob was very fond of Nigel Tassell's 'Whatever Happened To The C86 Kids', tracking down every musician on that fabled tape, and Michael Hann's @michaelhann 'Denim And Leather', because even if the New Wave of British Heavy Metal isn't quite his bag, he found it a great (hilarious) exploration of a scene that had huge repercussions (also, Bob reckons Free Country by Witchfinder General is a lost garage punk classic in NWOBHM clothes).
Will Hodgkinson's @will.hodgkinson 'In Perfect Harmony' does an amazing job of reassessing and interviewing unhip 70s non-canonical names like Chicory Tip, David Essex and Lieutenant Pigeon (obviously these three have always been canonical to us).
Our current collective read is Gordon King's @gordonking2000 hilarious and heartwarming story of his band The World Of Twist 'When Does The Mind-Bending Start?' It tells the strange, wonderful, bittersweet tale of one of the UK's greatest unsung groups. Older readers may remember Saint Etienne's first show as 'Sarah Bob and Pete' was supporting them at London's now-demolished Astoria. The days!
