A Glimpse Of Stocking

From 9.30am tomorrow - Friday 1st December 2023 - we are offering brand new limited edition Christmas tee-shirts, sweat-shirts and hoodies based on our 'Glimpse Of Stocking' LP design. These will only be available to order between the 1st and the 31st of December from our merchandise shop here:

https://saint-etienne-official.myshopify.com (Or follow the link in bio)

The good news for UK buyers is that there is no postage to pay on orders of tops, tees and totes placed between 9.30am 1st December and midnight Sunday 3rd December.

All our shirts are ethically sourced and made strictly on a print on demand basis so we can avoid any wastage and unsold stock - we'll only produce what you order. Our range of tops and tees are made from soft, ethically sourced, certified organic cotton and printed in a factory powered by renewable energy. PLUS when you've worn out your Saint Etienne tee shirt, sweatshirt or tote bag you can send it back to the factory (for free in the UK) who will recycle it into new products.

HWUTL

To celebrate it's 10th birthday we're hosting a special screening of 'How We Used To Live' at the Rio in Dalston this coming Wednesday 22nd November - and as a special extra the film's director Paul Kelly and our very own Pete Wiggs will be in Q&A with Travis Elborough co-writer of the script.

The last tickets are available now from the link in the bio.

'How We Used To Live' (70 mins - 2013) - is a cinematic ode to post-war London by acclaimed director Paul Kelly, created using rare footage drawn from the British Film Institute's National Archive and original music by Saint Etienne with a narration by Ian McShane.

Using only colour footage from 1950 - 1980 'How We Used To Live' covers the early days of the welfare state up to the opening years of Margaret Thatcher's reign. From the shadow of the war and the great future created by the welfare state to the rise of individualism and the triumph of the consumer society, it is as much a lyrical cinematic meditation on life now as then.

The soundtrack is written by Saint Etienne's Pete Wiggs with vocalist Sarah Cracknell providing Swingle-y harmonies, while the script is by the band's Bob Stanley in collaboration with the author Travis Elborough. This is brought to life through the distinctive voice of Deadwood star Ian McShane. Mixing history with fantasy, the viewer is led back through time by McShane's fictional narrator whose only constant is London. It is a city that he fell hopelessly in love with as a child in the provinces and his digressive personal reminisces provide a universal account of the period, its hopes and ambitions and its fears and anxieties.

Please note: following the film and Q&A there will be an afterparty with DJs, drinks and chat at the Marquis public house, 48 Stoke Newington road, N16 - all are welcome!!

Music For Hermione...

...is the only new Saint Etienne music released this year. A limited edition two-track 10" vinyl (with free download card) 'Music For Hermione' will be available to pre-order from 5pm GMT this coming Tuesday 21st November here:
saint-etienne-official.myshopify.com/collections/vinyl (or follow the link in the bio)

The new recordings were specially composed to soundtrack 'Kingdom Of The Sick', an animated film by renowned artist Andy Holden that accompanied his 'Full of Days' exhibition - a tribute to the unknown artist Hermione Burton, whose collected work Andy had found in charity shops scattered across Bedfordshire. The exhibition was a highlight of the British Art Show at Manchester's Whitworth Gallery last year.

Sarah appears as the animated figure in the film, and her soft-spoken narration - as well as her inimitable vocals - feature on the A-side, 'Facets Of My Life'. She also narrates on the noirish, jazz-tinged b-side 'Did She Fall Or Was She Pushed'.

The gorgeous artwork is by Andy Holden himself and the music was recorded with the estimable Augustin Bousfield at Saltaire Studios.

Both red and black vinyl editions are extremely limited and expected to sell out quickly.

Each order (not every record but every order) comes with a free Christmas card personally signed by Bob, Pete and Sarah.

Fingers on buttons next Tuesday!!

It's that time of year again and we have some special treats lined up for you.

At 5pm GMT, Tuesday 21st November we'll be opening pre-orders for our two Christmas 2023 items at https://saint-etienne-official.myshopify.com/collections/vinyl (or click the link in the bio).

First is a vinyl edition of 'Built On Sand'.
Originally pressed on CD only for members of the Saint Etienne fan club in Christmas 1999, 'Built On Sand' gathered together 14 previously unreleased nuggets.

Highlights include: Suburban Autumn Lieutenant, recorded by Etienne Daho as Le Baiser Francais; a pitch for a new theme to BBC TV's The Clothes Show; Tomorrow Never Dies, another pitch, this time for a Bond theme; and the minimal techno-pop Keep Nothing. There are also outtakes from Good Humor and Sound Of Water, unavailable anywhere else.

Available on vinyl for the very first time, this new Foreign Office edition comes in a glossy card sleeve with printed inner bag and download card and is pressed on both splatter and black vinyl editions.

Second up is 'Music For Hermione', the only new music released by Saint Etienne during 2023.
Two new recordings composed to soundtrack 'Kingdom Of The Sick', an animated film by renowned artist Andy Holden that accompanied his 'Full of Days' exhibition feature on a special limited edition 10" single exclusively available at our store (follow link in bio). The film paid tribute to the unknown artist Hermione Burton, whose collected work Andy had found in charity shops scattered across Bedfordshire and the exhibition was a highlight of the British Art Show at Manchester's Whitworth Gallery last year.

Both red and black vinyl editions are very limited and expected to sell out before Christmas.
