Saint Etienne Party

An evolving playlist of Saint Etienne party tunes compiled by Sarah Cracknell.

It's been a tricky year for everyone, especially key workers, those working in healthcare and the NHS. But we can still have a party in our own bubble tomorrow night, dancing around the kitchen, glass of something fizzy in hand! With that in mind I've put a playlist of some of my favourite Etienne party tunes together (click the link in the bio) and wish you all a Happy New Year and a very special 2021!

Lots of love xxx

A Hazy Shade Of Winter

The first in new series of Saint Etienne playlists for Spotify is titled A Hazy Shade Of Winter and is available now. We decided to gather together an album's worth of melancholy moments from our back catalogue. If you're a fan of Hobart Paving, Marble Lions and Goodnight then this one might just be for you. An album so poignant and sad that it will lift your spirits and warm the cockles of your heart.

Fan Club Items - Stand By For Action

2020 Fanclub Items will be available for order on Tuesday November 17 through Greedbag.

More Words And Music Hello everyone! Well, it's that time of year when we ring up our local pressing plant and ask if they might be able to put us on their Christmas list. This year we'll be pressing that long deleted US-only bonus disc More Words And Music on 12 inch vinyl. When we did the new deluxe CD earlier this year, it did feel like a shame that oddities like Solid Gold, Racing Car and Your Valentine hadn't made it onto vinyl. So here they are! Exactly as it was released in 2012 but now on beautiful clear vinyl with green, yellow and black splatter effect to match the main album, or for purists an even more limited black vinyl edition. Both versions include a download code. Sleeve design comes courtesy of Paul Kelly and of course features the Phil Skegg/Dorothy song map. A companion album to the record the Guardian's Michael Hann considers our best ever.

As there's nothing new on the record, anyone who buys a copy will also receive our Christmas 2020 CD-stroke-Christmas card. This contains three brand new recordings: Access To All Alone, Toot Baldon and Wish Park. Not actual Christmas bangers, as this didn't really feel like the year for our Shaky tribute, but all three are exclusive songs. Sleeve photography is by Alasdair McLellan and the EP was produced by Augustin Bousfield of Bradford legends Gurgles, and we think you'll like it.

Cafe Exil New Adventures In European Music 1972-1980

Bob Stanley releases a new compilation on December 11, 2020 on Ace Records.

When David Bowie and Iggy Pop relocated from LA to continental Europe, taking trains to Berlin, Paris and Warsaw, they would have come across new music that was very different to the burgeoning disco scene they left behind. Cafe Exil - named after one of Bowie's favourite Berlin haunts - imagines the soundtrack that would have informed Low, Heroes and Lodger. It's an awesome mix of electronica, Krautrock, and experimental treats.

St Etienne Daho 1995

We met Etienne Daho at a show at the Arapajo in Paris, which I mostly remember for the number of pillars on the dancefloor and worse sightlines than Filbert Street.

He was very warm and easy to talk to, and I knew he had written a book on Francoise Hardy, which gave us plenty to talk about. Pretty soon, we ended up recording together at Olympic Studios in Barnes (virtually next door to where Debsey grew up).

Being a huge star in France, Etienne was able to get Pierre & Gilles to do the cover for what became the Reserection mini-album. What a treat! Me and Pete can be seen lurking, in our characteristic fashion, in the undergrowth.

Saint Etienne Disco: What?

Bob Stanley: That was me... our lad was randomly playing some tapes that he found in a box - I heard a demo of On The Shore that I didn’t realise was in there. Not the mother lode exactly, but something I don’t think exists anywhere beyond this one cassette (hence the dymotape).

Discography Update - It's Taking Part That Counts

In 2012 London got the summer olympics. WIAIWYA, the label who recently issued the Saint Etienne Camel Coat 7 Inch put out a olympics themed 2 CD compilation that same year called It's Taking Part That Counts which featured the Saint Etienne instrumental track Steeplechase.

You can find this compilation fully unboxed for the first time in the Saint Etienne on Compilations section.

You can still pick up a copy of this CD for 5 pounds through the labels bandcamp site

45 and counting.

This year Ace celebrates its 45th anniversary. Singles have always been a vital part of their release schedule and they are marking this with the release of seven limited edition seven-inchers. Bob Stanley is responsible for compiling one of them. It's released at the end of August.

For the first time on 7-inch, here are two hugely in-demand library music tracks. Rubba’s ethereal ‘Way Star’ has been sampled by Madlib and will be included on a new Ace collection called “Cafe Exil: New Adventures In European Music 1972-1980” later this year. Here’s your chance to get a rare limited-edition 7-inch of a track from a library album which would otherwise set you back an eye-watering £200. ‘Moon Bird’ features an ethereal Barbara Moore wordless vocal plus Roger Webb’s flute-led autumnal jazz backing, and was a highlight of Ace’s acclaimed “English Weather” compilation. It was originally on De Wolfe’s “Vocal Patterns” LP in 1971, which is now a £150 item.

July 7, 2020

New Ace Compilation by Saint Etienne called 76 In The Shade was officially announced today and will be released on August 28, 2020.

Compiled By Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne.

The months without rain and airless days and nights might not have been something out of the ordinary in the Algarve or the south of France, but it was without precedent in Britain. The Summer of 1976 has remained a benchmark for long, hot summers – there may have been scorchers since, but none have seemed quite as relentless or enervating. The country melted into a collective puddle. “76 In The Shade” probably wasn’t anyone’s real life soundtrack of the year – that could have included Bowie’s “Station To Station” and Abba’s “Greatest Hits”. Instead, Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley has put a compilation together that sonically evokes the summer of 1976 itself, its sweet heat and almost narcotic lethargy.

Getting out of the sun, you might have sat inside with the radio on, and heard the dreamy wooziness of Liverpool Express’s ‘You Are My Love’, 10cc’s ‘I’m Mandy Fly Me’, or the Emotions’ ‘Flowers’. Or maybe you flopped out in front of the telly, where you heard an alternative summer soundtrack – the music libraries that provided the bulk of the testcard’s music gave us Simon Park’s minimal ‘Stoned Out’ and John Cameron’s deeply immersive ‘Liquid Sunshine’; the Californian jazzer Spike Janson provided the wordless vocal harmonies of ‘Walking So Free’.

“76 In The Shade” follows in the footsteps of Bob Stanley’s hugely successful comps for Ace, including “English Weather” and “The Tears Of Technology”. It suggests bright yellow sunshine, hot plastic car seats, cats lolloping on the lawn. A few tracks (Smokey Robinson, Cliff Richard, David Ruffin, Carmen McRae) act as necessary splashes of cooling water; most of them sound like it’s just too hot to move. Luckily, you don’t need to.

Available on CD and a 2LP 180g pressing, with deluxe heavy-duty gatefold sleeve, that features a bonus track!

New Ace Compilation by Saint Etienne called Saint Etienne Present Songs For The Fountain Coffee Room was announced today and will be released on July 24, 2020.

“Songs For The Fountain Coffee Room” is the latest in the highly popular “Saint Etienne Present” series, soundtracks for places both real and imaginary. This time, Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have put together a selection to fit a bar in mid-70s Los Angeles, the kind of place where Warren Beatty and Julie Christie might meet in the afternoon for a secret rendezvous between shooting scenes for Shampoo.

There’s a high quotient of airy, top-down soul, FM yacht rock, and an even larger amount of blue-eyed soul, with the odd singer-songwriter from Laurel Canyon making an appearance.

Familiar summer sounds come from Todd Rundgren (‘Love Is The Answer’), Millie Jackson (‘A House For Sale’) and Seals & Crofts (‘Get Closer’). Among the discoveries are Hall and Oates’ deep cut ‘Lilly (Are You Happy)’; Bill Quateman’s irresistible acoustic guitar and string-powered ‘Only Love’; Marvin Gaye’s gorgeous ‘Where Are We Going?’, from the period between “What’s Going On” and “Let’s Get It On”; and the £100 crossover soul gem ‘One Way Or The Other’ by the Fifth Avenue Band. These gems are the kind of thing Netflix will be tripping over themselves to use next season.

Amid the potted palms, the pace is strictly mid-tempo; it’s too warm for anything faster. The windows are wide open, the sky is a clear blue, and this is the perfect summer soundtrack.

A Scene In Between

Without photos, film, proper documentation, history dissolves into the soft focus of personal memory. Following on from Sam Knee’s influential book, A Scene In Between, which covered the years 1980-1988, director, Paul Kelly from Heavenly Films has been working on a film that engages with this same important period which partly followed on from punk music. At the time it was mostly unlabelled, seen as a kind of independent almost pop music (later shortened to indie), which connected up a cluster of mostly melodic groups that went all the way from the fragile to the ferocious - Television Personalities, Orange Juice, Dolly Mixture, Marine Girls, Strawberry Switchblade, The Pastels, Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smiths, Shop Assistants, My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, Loop, The Vaselines and of course, many, many others.

We're keen to add to our collection of unseen footage (film, video, photographs) to better tell the story of the scene in between, and what was going on around it in 1980s Britain. We’re interested in anything you might have relating to those groups but even more so other music culture, art events, clubs, shows, cities, street life, home life, job centres, political events, CND rallies. The view from your window. Maybe your parents were in a cine-club or you had a Super-8 camera or did something as part of a personal project, maybe you recently turned up some weird stuff at a jumble sale.

No matter how much of a tangent, how small or insignificant it may seem, it will help us to tell this story. We want to get it right and to do that we need you to help us be exactly in the moment.

If you feel you can help please contact us via info@heavenlyfilms.net

Thanks to everyone who's been in touch since our last message. The response was overwhelming and we will be getting back to everyone shortly. We still need more period archive so do please message us or write if you have anything you think might be of interest.

Ace Records has announced the compilation Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs Present The Tears Of Technology which will be released on 2XVinyl and CD. There will also be limited Edition White Vinyl pressings of the release avaialable from Rought Trade Records.

Compiled by Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, “The Tears Of Technology” celebrates this brief period when scruffy synth duos from the provinces broke through and took over British pop. Like mellotrons before them, synths could project a strange and deep emotion; listen to OMD’s ‘Sealand’, or the Human League’s ‘WXJL Tonight’, and it was clear that something in the wiring had an inherent melancholy.
