35 years ago Saint Etienne released their first single and it featured the vocals of one Moira Lambert.

Today we have added a new section to the Saint Etienne Disco Website which attempts to tell the story of the mythical voice behind Only Love Can Break Your Heart. We have even thrown in a whole discography for Moira.

International

From today's public post by Saint Etienne

So, with the first play of 'Glad' on BBC 6 Music last Friday came the news that our forthcoming LP 'International' is to be our last. We've been overwhelmed by all your messages and the amazing tributes that people have been posting online. We're not splitting up, we simply feel that now is the right moment to draw a line under new recordings.

Judging by the response to 'Glad' we're certain you're going to enjoy the LP as much as we did making it. It's released on September 5th and available to pre-order from this coming Thursday. More on that below...but first...

"It wasn't a light decision to make 'International' our last album, but it felt right and made being together and making tracks with some of our heroes very special."

"Hopefully we've made life a bit better for anyone who was listening. I like it when groups or singers stop recording because they feel like they've done all they wanted to do and said all they wanted to say. We think it's time to say goodbye, and we wanted to do so on our own terms."

Saint Etienne's new album International was announced today via Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Radio.

From the mouth of Laverne, this will be the last Saint Etienne album.

Album will be officially released on Sep 5, 2025.

In addition to Glad, future singles will include Brand New Me and Take Me To The Pilot.

Guests on the record include Nick Heyward, Janet Planet of Confidence Man, Erol Alkan, Paul Hartnoll of Orbital, and Vince Clarke.

Debsey Wykes

Saint Etienne's not-so-secret fourth member Debsey Wykes has written a book.

Teenage Daydream

It's not out until the 25th September but is available to pre-order from Rough Trade, Monorail, Resident, to name a few.

Long before duetting with Sarah on 'Who Do You Think You Are' Debsey was a singer, bassist and founding member of trailblazing all-girl post punk band, Dolly Mixture, alongside her school friends, Rachel Bor and Hester Smith. 'Teenage Daydream' tells a story of how this close-knit trio of skint girls took their bedroom dreams and fuelled by punk's DIY energy, imagination and a deep longing, created a world with real magic.

Debsey traces her diverse, sometimes feverish, passions - for Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Bay City Rollers, Stevie Nicks, the Shangri-las, Patti Smith, Blondie, The Ramones - as she moves from posters on her bedroom wall to the real world live gig scene and then being part of the line-up, with her best mates. For a brief moment - signing with Paul Weller's record label and following the success of 'Happy Talk', their Number One collaboration with Captain Sensible - success seemed theirs for the taking.

In Debsey's own words: "The idea of writing about my life in Dolly Mixture was only slightly less terrifying than the idea of someone else writing about it. Having announced to my friends, family and bandmates that I was going ahead there was no backing out"

Teenage Daydream is a bittersweet coming of age story of youthful enterprise and a determination to create your own rules and identity - as musicians and as young women. Not to be missed.

May 22, 2000, twenty-five years ago today, Saint Etienne released Sound Of Water in the UK on LP, CD, and Cassette via Mantra Recordings.

We're pleased to announce that our new single 'Alone Together' will be available to pre-order from 5pm GMT next Wednesday 26th February. This release will be pressed as a limited edition 12" - on both Black and Apricot coloured vinyl - plus a four track CD EP.

The 12 Inch features two brand new remixes of 'Alone Together'... the 'Hove Lawns Sunset Mix' by Pete, plus the sublime 'Morecambe Pier Dub' by Bob and Augustin Bousfield.

The CD EP includes two extra mixes... Colleen Murphy's stunning, bossanova 'Cosmodelica Mix' plus an extended mix of the original LP version.

I Love To Paint

In January 1995 Saint Etienne fans started to receive the first Fanclub release from Saint Etienne. I Love To Paint, a 12 track CD, was the result of the band rummaging through five years worth of Saint Etienne tapes for unreleased material. The release was limited to 500 copies.

Before Saint Etienne

The Next Projected Sound (Circa 1988 & 1989)

Pete, Bob and Andrew Midgley formed this side project and were active in the late eighties. They were The Next Projected Sound for their "pisspoor 1988 attempt at acid house", mainly memorable for Richard Norris coming to the studio and lending them his 303. Tracks were recorded across two sessions but never released.

Reardon (Circa 1983/84)

Around 83/84, Bob and Pete created their semi-famous 'party tapes', they chose the nom de guerre Reardon. The thinking here was that nobody from the UK would use the name because of Ray Reardon the aged snooker player, therefore the name would sound like an authentic NY electro artiste. Our assumption is that 'We Survived' came out of this session.

The Lost Chapel Picnic (Circa Early Eighties)

At the height of DIY in the early eighties, Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs hired a portastudio for a week, with a Korg MS 10 they'd saved up for, and created an unlistenable noise under the name The Lost Chapel Picnic. This has never been released.

Cat Music

Pollards Hill Mitcham, around this time 35 years ago.

Ian Catt: "They came in to record some demos - I'd worked with the Field Mice, and Bob had asked Bobby Wratten where they did their stuff. The original recording was done in January 1990 at my mum's place in Pollards Hill. They'd said they were going to start a group and make records in the 90s - such a stereotypically Saint Etienne thing to say. And so in January there they were."

Ian Catt: "As far as I'm concerned they were making a demo! Two songs in an afternoon. We didn't really have much time to think about it."

Ian Catt: "It was amazingly quick. They left clutching their demo and I didn't really expect to see them again. Then two months later they were back."

The assumption is that the two songs were Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Kiss And Make Up. Vocals for the two songs were done initially by Moira Lambert. Kiss and Make Up would be re-recorded with Donna Savage as vocalist and released in October of this year.

The Ship

Croydon, around this time 35 years ago.

"There was one pub in Croydon where everyone into alternative music went, The Ship. There was a really diverse mix of goths, indie kids, greebos and old rockers who drank there, with a couple of big skinhead lads on the door. That’s where I met Pete’s brother Danny(Wiggs) and we were very close for a few years. When his brother and Bob Stanley decided to start a band they had the idea of using different singers for each song, so they asked Moira(Lambert) to record a couple of demos for them. It took about five hours to record from start to finish in a bedroom studio and was never even meant to be released. But it went on to be a massive cult hit – I still hear it on the radio thirty years later, it’s amazing. They gave her some money when it became clear it was doing well. Whenever I hear it now it takes me right back to that bedroom studio." Mark Wilsher, Faith Over Reason*
