Faber & Faber are reissuing new versions of Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley's books Yeah Yeah Yeah (10th Anniversary) and Let's Do It on September 21, 2023 in the UK.

Yeah Yeah Yeah will feature a new foreward by Ken Bruce and a new final chapter

Let's Do It will feature a new forward by Lenny Kaye

On September 1, 2023 Two-Piers is reissuing the 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of the The Boo Radleys Giant Steps on CD and 2XLP/10Inch. It will include the two Saint Etienne remixes as bonus material.

Saint Etienne At RMS Studios

Another Stop on the UK Saint Etienne Walking Tour.

Museum of Croydon and Culture Croydon have recently put a Saint Etienne plaque outside RMS Studios on Clifton Road SE25.

Saint Etienne recorded at RMS Studios for the So Tough sessions. Saint Etienne's Icerink Label also used the studios to record the first Golden and Oval singles.

Alas, the studio which was founded by Andy Le Vien and Alan Jones in 1977 shut down at the end of the last decade (10s).

Out Today

Deary release their Fairground EP on Sonic Cathedral which features the Saint Etienne Meet Augustin Bousfield At The Top Of Town Remix. Available on 10 Inch Green Vinyl from the record shops or Downloadable from bandcamp.

Old Saint Etienne Remix

On May 5, 1998 Matador Records issued Pizzicato Five's Remix Album: Happy End Of You which featured the Saint Etienne Remix of Love's Theme. Interesting enough Bob back in the day had mentioned that they were working on a remix for a different track 'My Baby Portable Player Sound'. Maybe this one is buried somewhere in the P5 vaults?

A Song For Eurotrash 25

May 4 1998 was a busy day for Saint Etienne fans. Along with Good Humor, this compilation Song for Eurotrash was also released.

It features Saint Etienne's covering/reworking of La La La which was the Spanish winning entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1968 in London.

This great compilation also featured Kenickie, Dubstar, Edwyn Collins, Terry Hall, and Bridget Bardot to name a few. For tracklisting and artwork click on the links.

Into The Future Its thirty years ago and writer Simon Price predicts that Shampoo will be big in 1993. The first single is scheduled out in March but ends up getting issued in June on Saint Etienne's own record label Icerink. Lawrence from Felt, Denim, Go-Kart Mozart, Mozart Estate is involved under the pseudonym Discotheque USA.

Photo taken on the set of the Manic Street Preacher's Little Baby Nothing Video from late 1992 just before Shampoo got going in 1993. Jacqui and Carrie appeared in the video. Also of note Jacqui and Carrie ran a Manic Street Preacher Fanzine in the early nineties.

Buried Treasure?

The Disco has unearthed a song by Mark Waterfield with Sarah Cracknell on vocals released on May 11, 2009 titled Forever Whatever. We are not aware of any physical recording of this. It seems to be an earlier and different version of what would become Saint Etienne's 'I Threw It All Away' on Words & Music. The link to the Youtube video can be found below on Mark Waterfield's Youtube site. The track has been added to the Sarah Cracknell Collaborations section of the website.

Sarah met Mark in College in 1988. In 1990, Sarah Jane Cracknell's vocals were featured on an Inter Nation track I Fell In Love With A Stranger. It was released on 12 Inch only in the UK. The song was written by Mark Waterfield, Terry Gorka, and J. Moore.

Since then Sarah has co-written a number of songs with Mark which have been used by Edyta Gorniak, Saint Etienne and Sarah herself. Below is a full list:

Let's Do It

Bob Stanley has won this year’s prestigious Penderyn Music Book Prize with his outstanding Let's Do It - The Birth Of Pop. The Penderyn Music Book Prize, now celebrating its 9th year, is the first UK-based prize specifically for music titles (history, theory, biography, autobiography). The prize is awarded at the annual Laugharne Weekend, and is sponsored by Penderyn Distillery. The prize is for UK published books only and was launched in 2015.

Saint Etienne are offering hardback copies of the book with a special 26 track CD. The fanclub CD, Let's Do It - Deep Magic From The Dawn Of Pop, is only available via the Saint Etienne online store (link below) and features 26 music highlights that soundtrack the book. If you haven't read Let's Do It yet now's your chance to pick up a copy with a very special freebie.

King Of Woolworths

20 years ago today King Of Woolworths released their album L'illustration Musicale on Mantra Recordings. Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley collaborated with the band on their track Montparnasse. Other contributors included Dot Allison with vocals on Sell Me Back My Soul and Emma Pollock of the Delgados with vocals on Nuada.

King Of Woolworths thank Bob and Pete in the credits and also list Saint Etienne as an influence. Both Saint Etienne and King Of Woolworths were on Mantra Recordings at this time. Saint Etienne had also remixed an earlier King Of Woolworths' single called Bakerloo in 2001.

Soft Like Me turns 20

Saint Etienne's single turned 20 today. It was originally released on March 17th in 2003 as a two CD set and 7 Inch in the UK. It featured the rapping of Vanessa George aka Wildflower

Currently tracking 5 different pressings in the Discography across various formats.

Full Of Days Hermione Burton & Andy Holden

The exhibit runs from March 19 till April 30th at the Gallery Of Everything in London. It features The Andy Holden film Kingdom Of The Sick about Hermione which is soundtracked by Saint Etienne with Augustin Bousfield and a voiceover by Sarah Cracknell as Hermione.

Thirty years ago today News of a new album called So Tough appeared in the weekly UK press.

Kylie Minogue

In 1992 Saint Etienne were asked for comments on Kylie Minogue by a UK newspaper. This is what they said. The article has been added to the Saint Etienne Public Library. Thanks to NothingElseOn for sharing.

In 1994 Kylie released a cover of Saint Etienne's Nothing Can Stop Us as a B-Side to her Confide In Me Single. Interesting enough Saint Etienne also wrote a track called When Are You Coming Home? which Kylie also recorded but it has never been released.

You're In A Bad Way Turns 30

30 years ago today Saint Etienne released the single You're In A Bad Way in the UK on 7 Inch, 12 Inch, CD Single, and cassette single. The single would spend 5 weeks in the UK charts reaching a highest position of 12. It was also released in Germany and the US. The Disco is currently tracking 13 items across multiple formats.

Sylvie turns 25

Saint Etienne's single turned 25 today. It was originally released on January 26th in 1998 as a two CD set and cassette in the UK.

It was also released in Australia, Europe, and Japan. Currently tracking 21 different pressings in the Discography across various countries and formats.

First Saint Etienne related event of 2023 has been announced. Birdie will play the Glas-Goes Pop Festival in July.

15 Year Milestone

Saint Etienne fan club albums have become the stuff of legend - feted, collected, booted. 15 years ago in January 2008 Saint Etienne offered Lovers Unite members an opportunity to receive them re-packaged and re-mastered as a limited edition box of 3000.

Boxette contained I Love To Paint, Built On Sand, Asleep At The Wheels Of Steel, and a fourth disc that collected odd tracks from other fan club cds and binded them together with a few rarities never before released.

In 2019, Bob compiled 'The Daisy Age' on CD and Vinyl. A diverse compilation of hip hop featuring tracks from 1989-1994.

Discosis

First issue of Saint Etienne Disco's annual Newsletter is out today and its called 'Discosis'. A DIY cut and paste 20 page digital document put together with input from Saint Etienne Fans and the Saint Etienne Discography. A nice summary of what happened in 2022 and what's in store so far for 2023.

Happy New Year

2023 looks to be another exciting year on the Saint Etienne front. So Tough turns 30 and Good Humor turns 25.
