State Of The Union Oct 26, 2018

A brand new compilation from Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs via Ace Records. Available to pre-order now.

By mid-1968 there was a growing consensus that something had gone horribly wrong with the American dream. The nation’s youth had loudly made their feelings clear, but now the older, pre-Beatles generations began to look at the country – with urban riots, Vietnam, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy – and wonder what the hell was happening.

This album includes rare classics (The Beach Boys’ ‘Fourth Of July’), lost masterpieces (Roy Orbison’s seven-minute ‘Southbound Jericho Parkway’), and forgotten gems by some of the biggest names in the business (Elvis Presley’s ‘Clean Up Your Own Back Yard’).

Reactions to America’s existential crisis ranged in subject matter from divorce (Frank Sinatra’s ‘The Train’) and the break-up of the nuclear family (The Four Seasons’ ‘Saturday’s Father’), to eulogies for fallen heroes (Dion’s ‘Abraham Martin and John’), sympathy for Vietnam vets (Johnny Tillotson’s ‘Welfare Hero’), the church’s institutional racism (Eartha Kitt’s intense ‘Paint Me Black Angels’), and even questioning the ethics of the space programme (Bing Crosby’s terrific ‘What Do We Do With The World’).

Compiled by Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, State Of The Union follows on from their highly acclaimed English Weather and Paris In The Spring compilations. With clear parallels between today's fractured country and the USA fifty years ago, this is a fascinating condensation of what Americans were thinking when they turned on the TV, or the radio, or simply walked down Main Street in 1968.

Available on CD and 180g blue vinyl double LP

US Tour CDs - Message from the Band

Last Wednesday we were hit with some really bad news that the US/Canada tour CDs aren't going to be ready in time for the Good Humor anniversary shows. Despite getting the artwork and music delivered two weeks ahead of the specified schedule the manufacturing plant have let us down with no real explanation other that "we are experiencing an unprecedented volume of orders and your products are held in a queue".

We are as upset as you are.

To remedy this bad situation we've come up with something that we hope will work for all those who were expecting to pick these up at the shows.

It's a pre-order certificate that will guarantee the CD's to all those who were expecting to purchase them on the night.

We were due to offer the Surrey EP at $12 US and the Double CD Mondo Casino at $20 US. With the pre order certificate you'll be able to buy the pair shipped to your door for $30. Simply fill in the certificate, pay our merchandise seller, get your certificate stamped (top and bottom), we'll hand you the top portion which is your proof of purchase and we'll retain the bottom part with your details for processing the second stock has arrived.

This means that we can keep our promise of giving those who attend the shows first dibs on the tour exclusives. We're sorry you'll have to wait but we'll ensure we get those in the mail ASAP before anyone else.

Sorry that we can't offer either title individually but three forms would have made things too complicated.

Any stock not accounted for after the Good Humor shows in America, Canada and London. Will be put up for grabs via our web shop - but international shipping costs will be added at that time.

We're really sorry for the inconvenience caused by this but hopefully the certificates (printed on heavy card) will be a good keepsake and a small something to make up for the wait.

If you have pals who can't make the shows perhaps arrange filling in a certificate for direct delivery to them wherever they are.

The CDs will be worth the wait plus we'll be carrying a range of specially printed Good Humor tee shirts on the tour.

See you later this week and next!

Lots of love,

Bob, Pete and Sarah xx

Certificate

Feb 19

Thursday March 1st - 5pm GMT

Every now and again we have a clear out at the Saint Etienne online shop and often we find things we didn't even know we had. Old things and newer things. Some things we've never offered for sale and some things we'd forgotten we ever made. Other things that got forgotten, unsold in a dusty corner. On March the 1st we'll be holding the 'Saint Etienne Sale Of The Century' with lots of rare and delete items (in super limited quantities) and other things at super discounted prices. It's our way of having a spring clean before spring even starts and we're certain there will be something for even the most hardcore Etienne collectors.

And.... as a special bonus we'll be giving a free 'Live At The Barbican' CD (a rare four song freebie given out at our 2016 Christmas parties) to the first 250 orders over £20.

More news of what will be up for grabs in the next few days. In the mean time mark 5pm GMT on 1st of March in your diaries for a visit here

Happy New year. Big Milestone for the Saint Etienne Disco today. With the help of the fans and the Internet the Disco has sketched out a rough timeline for the band from 1990-2017 for concerts, movies, and Djing events. Yes, hard to believe, that is 28 years of history. It can be found in the Timelines/Concerts Section of the web. There will be gaps and if you are interested in filling any of those gaps feel free to connect with us via the email address above or through the facebook group.
