The Character Of Saint Etienne

The band had quite a few requests for a CD release of 'The Character Of Saint Etienne' and are looking into a special pressing of that in the new year. As they're unsure of CD demand these days they'll likely put this on pre-sale for a couple of weeks in January (TBC) so you can order as many as you like and they'll ship finished stock in March.

A Glimpse Of Stocking

Limited edition 2015 pressing - new old stock

Originally released in 2010 as Fanclub only CD 'A Glimpse Of Stocking' gathered together 15 festive Saint Etienne songs on one Christmasy compilation.

In 2015 the album was released on black vinyl housed in a beautiful retro style "flip back" sleeve with notes by Bob Stanley. We thought these had sold out but whilst switching stock over to our new Sandbag shop this summer we found 190 copies still shrink wrapped in brand spanking new condition.

For those of you who missed out on grabbing one of these back in 2015 now's your chance to bag a copy. Sorry, no signed Christmas cards with these but we're offering them at a special sale price of just 17 pounds a copy. Purchase from 6pm GMT on Tuesday 29th November and all early orders will be delivered in time for Christmas.

Book - How We Used Saint Etienne to Live

Do you remember how we used to live? British indie favourites Saint Etienne do. But they also remember a load of other stuff that never happened, so maybe they aren't the best people to ask.

Saint Etienne have spent three decades making music out of memories for people who make memories out of music. How We Used Saint Etienne to Live is the story of that reciprocal process, told in the wrong order but the right time. It's about the methods we use to remember, and what happens when those methods become outdated. It's a tale that involves tape splicing, town planning, Now compilations and Saint Etienne’s 1995 UK singles chart peak, 'He's On The Phone'.

Featuring original interviews with Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs and Sarah Cracknell, How We Used Saint Etienne To Live shows Saint Etienne's minds at work as they make and manipulate history and nostalgia. Expect to be shown the receipts. Expect selective recollections and shameless revisionism. Expect concrete facts and flights of fancy. Don't expect it to be immediately clear which is which.

You can pre-order Ramzy Alwakeel's book now from Repeater Books. Book is released on December 13, 2022.

5 Years ago today (Sep 8, 2017), Saint Etienne released Dive off their album Home Counties on 2 X CD Single. A 12 Inch was released shortly after.

“I started writing 'Dive' with Carwyn Ellis in early 2016, we’d worked on my solo album together and were on a bit of a roll. I love the final result, it reminds me of care free summer days growing up in Home Counties Windsor fooling around on the Thames. My favourite song on the EP is ‘Obvious' which is about leaving your hometown and boomeranging back later in life. It’s something that didn’t happen to me but so many of my old friends have returned to Windsor or infact never left. I envy the fact that they meet up together in the same pubs we used to hang out in our teens. That would be a welcome treat right now as I’m missing my recently departed friend Mick Bund. This release is dedicated to him.” Sarah Cracknell 2017

Snapshot

Japanese outfit Snapshot were Yugo Katayama, Yukari Takasaki who released a number of singles between 1993 and 1997 on Escalator Records. They must have been big fans of the Saint Etienne Record Label Icerink.

They released this CD Single in 1996 called Icerink. The artwork (5 Inserts) pays tribute to the Icerink Label's logo. The CD includes a track called Year Of The V-neck which may or may not be a cover (Elizabeth City State track title from the We Are Icerink Compilation). Hideki Kaji helped out on the EP.

They also released a CD Single in 1994 called Golden which included a song called Bob Hot. Likely in reference to the Icerink band Golden and the 1994 song Bob Cool by Spring included on the We Are Icerink CD Compilation.

Book Release

Gordon King's book on the World of Twist titled 'When Does the Mind-Bending Start?' is released today on Nine Eight Books. Gordon King is a guitarist, songwriter and co-founder of former British indie band World of Twist.

Gordon also did the Variety Club and Butlins Mixes of Saint Etienne's Avenue for the single release back in 1992.

Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley wrote about the World of Twist in NME in 1990. Historically Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne appeared in World Of Twist's video 'Sweets' in 1991. The song was taken from the band's album Quality Street.

Bob also released a World Of Twist 7 Inch titled 'The Sausage' on his Caff record label in 1992. The single included vocals of James Fry who has been a photographer of Saint Etienne over the years.

World Of Twist contributed one track to Saint Etienne's Icerink label called 'New Electric Pop And Soul' which appeared on the We Are Icerink Compilation in 1994.

Moira Lambert

Moira Lambert joined the C86 Show podcast for a discussion on May 30, 2022. First time hearing the non singing voice of Moira who was the vocalist on Saint Etienne's first single Only Love Can Break Your Heart. It would seem that Moira hooked up with Saint Etienne via the Croydon, UK music scene.

Moira was also in the band Faith Over Reason in the early nineties who released a few albums and singles. She was also involved in an outfit called Ova who seemed to have released one single which is impossible to find. On top of some further involvement in a number of club tracks Moira released some solo work in the 2000s while living in Canada.

She currently resides in the UK working with a non profit organization that uses performing arts to empower young adults with disabilities by developing communication, social interaction and other independence skills.

Icerink Month

We Are Icerink

"Numanesque electro nightmare music? Maybe."

"A frozen wasteland populated by robot musicians, constructed by and under the evil powers of pop svengalis? Probably."

"A fine selection of great big popmungus tunes, riddled though with more hooks than a pirate's convention? Definitely."

In 1994 Saint Etienne's label Icerink released the 'We Are Icerink' compilation which was a "rough and ready document of two years in the life of one of Britain's most underrated pop labels." The compilation captured the spirit of Golden, Sensuround, Oval, Supermarket, Shampoo, Earl Brutus from 1992-1993. It also added in six new bands into the mix.

In 1994, for more information and interviews, you needed to look no further than to Icerink operatives Jo Metcalf and Sarah Lowe out of Icerink headquarters at 130 Talbot Road in Kensington Market. The address which locates the office upstairs of Rough Trade records.

We are Icerink was the last release from the Icerink label. Why this great label stopped we don't know. One year later Bob Stanley had started up the Royal Mint label but that's another story.

Thanks for joining us at Icerink Month here at the Saint Etienne Disco. Hope you have enjoyed the revisit on the 30th anniversary of the labels launch in 1992.

If you have any more information on Icerink please contact us at saintetiennedisco@gmail.com. We are always looking for more history on the label including newspaper clippings, newspaper ads, press sheets, photos, ticket stubs, promo materials or just plain old knowledge from the fanbase.

Anthony Sweeney/Studio Treefrog

Designer of all the Icerink packaging for the 10 singles and the one compilation. Anthony was also the designer on a number of Saint Etienne releases in the nineties.

"Unlike many of his peers, St Martin's graduate Anthony Sweeney had no great yearning to get into design for music. In fact, he started out designing annual reports. But his brother went to college with Bob Stanley of indie darlings St Etienne...and one thing led to another."

Companies linked to Anthony over the years have included Studio Treefrog, M-Design, Fusion, Negativespace, and Superbird Creative.

'Who Do You Think You Are'

"This was going to be a solo single by Debsey on Icerink but then she joined the group and within seconds we were all on Top Of The Pops singing Happy Talk."

Debsey's 1992 version saw the light of day via the fanclub release Nice Price in 2006. Wonder if there are any other Icerink destined Debsey tracks buried in the archives?

6/12 Elizabeth City State contributed one track to the Icerink label called 'Year Of The V-Neck' which appeared on the We Are Icerink Compilation in 1994. This could be the most popular Icerink track ever released.

"Icerink's long lost band, much talked of, never heard."

"Elizabeth City State were a Manchester based Trio who could never hold onto a singer for more than a week."

Credited to Catt, McTaggart, and Sweeney nothing much is known about the band or the singer. The band was supposed to release an Icerink single sometime in 1992 but the single never appeared.

Catt may be long time Saint Etienne producer Ian Catt. Sweeney may be Record collector Gareth Sweeney? Mctaggart is likely Robert McTaggart who lives in Denmark now and went by the nickname Tag. Tag helped Bob write up the final Caff Zine Ambrosia in the summer of 1990. Tag also djed wih Bob at The Love Hangover night on February 15, 2009.

Again all this is speculation from digging around. From an internet perspective information on this outfit is scarce. Feel free to connect if you have further information on this outfit.

Saint Etienne Discography Update - News

Ace Records announced Bob's next Compilation called John Barry The More Things Change - Film, TV & Studio Work 1968-1973 due out on March 25th.

In the late 1960s and early 70s, John Barry was at his creative peak, writing both his greatest Bond music for On Her Majesty's Secret Service and the score for the Oscar-winning Midnight Cowboy within a few months of each other. As one decade melted into the next, Barry would provide a host of haunting, highly atmospheric scores: The Appointment, Deadfall, Mary Queen Of Scots, Follow Follow, with possibly his finest ever saved for Nicolas Roeg's masterpiece Walkabout. He also found time to write the deathless theme for TV series The Persuaders.

"The More Things Change" collects Barry's finest work from this period, including the whole of 1970's classic "Ready When You Are, J.B." album, released on CD for the very first time. In addition, it collects loose ends from the period (including selections from 1968's lost Richard Lester classic Petulia), then follows Barry into the early 70s.
