Beano: The Art Of Breaking The Rules
The Beano exhibition that has just opened at Somerset House has a couple of Saint Etienne related installations. One is a film, a spoof on the Look At Life films called Welcome To Beanotown - Sarah reads the text over music by Bob and Gus Bousfield. The other is a mock up of Beano's Records, the legendary Croydon shop, complete with a jukebox selection put together by Bob. The whole thing has been curated by artist Andy Holden.

In 1997, Emidisc, operated by Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs out of 47 Brewer Street in Soho London, released Marianne Faithful's single Hang It On Your Heart on CD Single in the UK. The song was co-produced and co-written with Alex James of Blur.
This would be the last Emidisc single to be issued. Tris Penna who was the Director of EMI Premier, the parent company of Emidisc, left the company to join Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group as creative director managing its record division. This seemed to bring an end to Emidisc.
At the same time Tris Launched It Records, an independant label distributed via Vital in the UK. Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne used to help in an A and R kind of role for It Records at the beginning.

Saint Etienne News
I've Been Trying To Tell You
Summer's here and the time is right to tell you a heck of a lot of news!
First up, we've made a new album called 'I've Been Trying To Tell You' that will be released on September 10th. It was recorded at Pete's Needham Sound studio and with Gurgles hero Gus Bousfield in Bradford. We're very proud of it. People who have heard the record have used words like "reverie" and "dreamlike". You may have heard snippets via Instagram and twitter and if you head to streaming platforms now you can listen a song called 'Pond House' from the new album.
Bob: "To me the album is about optimism, and the nineties, and how memory is an unreliable narrator. Pete and Gus have done a properly amazing production job. I think it sounds gorgeous."
Sarah: "It's the first sample driven album we've made since So Tough and it's been a really refreshing experience, such fun! It's both dreamy and atmospheric, late summer sounds."
Pete: "We've really pulled apart and dived deep into the samples; the concept and each of our interpretations of it have made this a very special sounding album, we hope you think so too."
- One of our favourite photographers Alasdair McLellan has made a film to accompany the album as well as doing all the stills photography for the record itself. It's beautiful - he's an amazing director and you've probably seen some of his Marc Jacobs ads. The film will premiere at NFT1 on the Southbank on 3rd September. Tickets go on sale to BFI members on Tuesday 3rd August and the general public on the Thursday 5th August here ( https://bit.ly/371Xsub). News of more screenings around the UK and abroad very soon.
- The premiere will be accompanied by a whole weekend of 'The Films Of Saint Etienne' - from Finisterre to Holderness and all points in between - on the Southbank between the 3rd and 5th of August. Most screenings will be accompanied by Q&As with us lot, and details of all seven films and a selection of shorts can be found here (https://bit.ly/3xaHzfw")
- The album itself with be available on both black and limited clear vinyl editions as well as a single disc CD and a limited double disc CD/DVD edition which includes both the album and the film...you can pre-order certain formats from our brand new, super streamlined music shop here ( https://saintetienne.ochre.store)
- We're also thrilled that Rough Trade have made 'I've Been Trying To Tell You' their album of the month for September and will offer an exclusive sky blue vinyl edition with a three track remix CD with mixes by Daniel Avery, Jane Weaver and Vince Clarke here (https://rghtrd.co/seibtttysocial)
- There's also talk of a Heavenly edition with an exclusive free flexidisc - please check their bandcamp shop here (https://bit.ly/3f0XC9B) for more details - and as if all that wasn't enough...
...if you like your albums 'super deluxe' we will be bringing you news of a limited edition box set with signed prints, film poster, DVD, exclusive 10" vinyl and 12" album very soon. Stay tuned.
Last but not least we'll be taking this show on the road around the UK in November and we'd love to see you at one of the following dates...

Train Driver In Eyeliner - Nick Sanderson Revisited - The Earl Brutus Cover Versions
"Looking out the window of a train is the only time I feel really relaxed."
Nick Sanderson was a train driver. He wore eyeliner. On April 22nd 2021 he should have been 60 years old.
A lighting conductor of creative disturbance, as frontman of the legendary Earl Brutus, Nick knew all about the strange and inescapable ambiguities of the British condition.
Train Driver in Eyeliner is a Memorial Device that remembers him in all his genius and life-force, a collection of 19 Earl Brutus Greats, specially recorded by friends, family and fanatics including Saint Etienne, the Jesus & Mary Chain's Jim Reid, Luke Haines Surrey Wrecking Crew, plus Nick's wife and son Romi and Syd, Earl Brutus bandmates and spiritual glam rock peers Giuda.
It's all available as a limited-edition cassette, a medium that is both retrospective and incredible futuristic - like the life and times of Nick himself.
Cassettes can be pre-ordered (see link) for delivery on Nick's 60th Birthday, 22nd April 2021.
All profits for this release will be donated to Cancer Research UK

Saint Etienne Disco Addition
Interesting enough Saint Etienne have compiled many compilations from 1994 till now. Every so often an unknown compilation will pop up on the radar which has remained hidden to the majority of the fans.
The Essential Love Songs of Burt Bacharach is one of those compilations which was released in 2013 on Spectrum Music, a sub-label of Universal Music. The CD is compiled and sequenced by Bob Stanley. The sleevenotes are written by Bob also.
Interesting enough Bob and Pete were to release Paradise Island: the lost Burt Bacharach on their Eclipse label in 2009 but it never saw the day of light. Wondering if there is a connection to this release.
Thanks to Discoer Paul W who flagged this one for the Discography.
